Ayurveda is considered the oldest health-care system in the world dating approximately 5,000 years old. The word Ayurveda translates “The Science of Life”, Ayur meaning “life” and veda meaning “knowledge”. The practices of Ayurveda are a proactive approach to avoiding illness: fresh seasonal food, herbs, daily exercise, bodywork, and regular cleansing to nourish the tissues, remove stagnation, and promote vitality.
Ayurveda views each individual as a unique combination of the five elements: earth, air, fire, water, and space. These elements combine into three constitutions or doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha. The combination of the three doshas in each individual has a specific influence on our physical, mental, and emotional tendencies. Determining which doshas are dominant can help us make the right diet and lifestyle choices that will maintain our overall health.
