Natural Rhythms

Fall is a time of natural transition, to reset our system, and restore our body's health. We often accumulate toxins over the summer which can later lead to colds, migraines, allergies, and weight gain. As the seasons change so should our daily habits. Fall is the time to slow down and purge toxins that are holding us down. Just as the trees strip down, we, too, can shed what no longer serves us as we prepare for the cooler months ahead.

In Ayurveda, the concept of fire, or agni, is central to our wellbeing. The strength of agni in the body determines our overall health. When agni is impaired, ama, or toxicity, forms, leading to problems. This might look like poor digestion, sinus congestion, skin irritation, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or a weak immune system.

We often hear that the root cause of disease can be traced back to our gut. Probiotics help keep good flora strong, but we should look to other practices a well — eating foods that compliment the season, a grounding yoga practice, pranayama, exercise, early to bed early to rise…

The accumulation of ama can be detrimental to our health. When we recognize ama is present in our body we can then learn to rid ourselves of it. If we can keep our digestive fire in its place then we’re on the road to optimal health.
