Chyawanprash Cookies

Chyawanprash is a cooked herbal jam made of sugar or honey, ghee, and sesame oil. The primary herb, Amla (Amalaki), is a rich source of vitamin c, and works synergistically with the other ingredients to create a rejuvenating tonic. It’s comparable to a multivitamin and is believed to rejuvenate the mind and body.

Giving up an entire jar to make cookies seems crazy. Chyawanprash is generally consumed daily by the teaspoon, but for special occasions, these make a wonderful sweet treat that you’ll want to share with others.

Ingredients:
1 Cup Butter (2 sticks)
3 tsp. Baking soda
2 Cup Dark Brown Sugar
1/2 Tsp. Salt
2 Eggs
1/4 Tsp. Ginger root powder
1 Jar of Chyawanprash

5 Cups whole wheat or almond flour
Coconut sugar for dusting

Directions: *Preheat oven to 350

  • In mixer or large bowel, cream together butter & brown sugar.

  • Add eggs (one at a time) and blend well.

  • Add chyawanprash. It’s going to be sticky… it’s helpful to use a knife to scrape it off.

  • Combine dry ingredients with wet ingredients until blended well. Use a small ice cream scoop to scoop out the dough and lightly roll in sugar. (or press them as I’ve done)

  • Place on a lined cookie sheet. Bake for 11-13 minutes

It’s important to note that, from a medicinal Ayurvedic perspective, cooked honey turns to glue and is thought to produce ama, or toxicity, in the body. Over time, consuming honey that has been heated may contribute to ill health. Honey that is being consumed as medicine should be raw and never cooked.
